Angel hair Vol. 27 #2, November 2000

Is your in-house material handling and conveying system generating angel hair? Angel hair is caused by high conveying velocity which generates frictional heat that results in small amounts of the polymer plating out on the interior walls of the conveying line. The plated out material then peels away in long strips forming what is referred to as angel hair.

To reduce the amount of angel hair being generated, reduce the conveying velocity by readjusting the conveying systems air to material ratio. Install conveying tubing that has an interior surface that has been rifled or dimpled.

This will not stop the material from plating out on the interior of the tubing walls, but it will now peel off in short lengths that will not cause problems.
