Stethoscope

A large screw driver, or steel rod, can be used as a stethoscope to isolate noises (bad bearings, gear wear, etc.) in a gear box. Just by holding the tip of the screw driver on a spot on the gear box and placing the handle of the screw driver to your ear, under some pressure, the sound can be magnified and isolated. This works amazingly well.
